Space Elevator Planet Cooling
there actually is an upper limit to the energy we can produce on earth (per time): solar and wind are limited by the energy from incoming radiation from the sun.
Non-renewable means are limited, because they add net energy to the earth system which is turned into heat where it is used, so at some point we get warming because we add significant amounts of energy ourselves. That’s the limit for fusion power.
TheSeeker: If we build enough space elevators, could we use them for radiant cooling? :P
We could have space elevators with huge blooms of metal foils at the top that radiate heat more efficiently than the atmosphere, yes.
But I didn’t do the math for that yet. With active heat transfer (i.e. pumped fluids inside the space elevator) that could increase the amount of energy that can be used on a planet.
… that’s an idea I’ve never seen explored in Science-Fiction. Did you?
Quantum Energy Teleportation for secure energy supply
For science-fiction stories: Quantum Energy Teleportation (PBS Video) could provide energy storage that’s physically protected from being accessed without the proper password.
Why magic does not break everything: individualized
A note on the video The TRUE Scale of MAGIC
Why magic may not break everything: because you cannot cut it away from individuals. Magic is more like creating a game — where creating the next version after the death of the original creator requires someone to spend a few years getting into the vibe.
Otherwise the bridge breaks when its creator dies.
Society cannot rely on mages. Maybe the last time it relied on magic for survival, almost half the population died when the new generation of mages wasn’t up to the task, because they watched too much trickle slop.
Compatible Humans
Comment to Humans will reproduce with anything.
This would be an awesome special feature for humans. Not faster, not stronger, not more intelligent, just emotionally and genetically more compatible.
My point is that humans as a society are actually very compatible. While there is Xenophobia, there are also many people with Xenophilia, and throughout the millennia humans with their very narrow genetic variability only survived because their social and emotional structures actively encouraged combining genetic material from far off tribes.
Now develop that further: technology removes the physiological requirement for compatibility, but the social and emotional structures favoring integration with foreign aliens persists.
This could finally solve the “and what are the humans?” problem for me in Science Fiction.
