Der Whistleblower will sich im Rahmen einer Vereinbarung mit dem US-Justizministerium schuldig bekennen. Im Anschluss an sein Schuldbekenntnis und eine Verurteilung wegen Spionagevorwürfen solle er in seine Heimat Australien zurückkehren. Das geht aus am Montagabend veröffentlichten Gerichtsdokumenten hervor. Ein Gericht muss die Einigung allerdings noch absegnen.

Spiegel nennt Details:

Dabei soll Assange in einem Punkt einen Verstoß gegen US-Spionage-Gesetze einräumen. Die Strafe dafür würde als verbüßt gelten. Der Australier könnte dann in seine Heimat zurückkehren. In der Nacht meldete die Plattform WikiLeaks, dass Assange Großbritannien per Flugzeug bereits verlassen habe.

Das Strafmaß soll nach bisherigem Stand 62 Monate betragen und als abgegolten betrachtet werden.

Das wären immernoch 5 Jahre Haft für Journalistische Tätigkeit. Aber er wäre endlich frei (und hätte kein 175 Jahre).

Yes, these problems shouldn’t exist. But they do.

One of the big strength of the Web is the commitment of Mozilla „do not break the web“.

But this is hitting its limits, because the scope of Javascript is being expanded more and more. It now includes stuff like filesystem APIs for almost arbitrary file access — as if we had not learned from Java WebStart that that’s a rabbit hole that never stops gifting vulnerabilities. So to keep new features safe despite their much higher security needs, old features are neutered.

I lost a decentralized comment system to similar changes.

I know why I no longer have a mildly dynamic website: the security risk of PHP is not linear.

That’s where Javascript shines: if you avoid comments (those are actually a hard problem: a social one) and server-side data (security risk), it actually has this linear increase in effort without the jump in security risk.

And this risk has increased a lot since the early mildly dynamic websites.

Case in point: the math trainer Ace Maths and the 280 lines of code m3u-Playlist player in Vanilla Javascript are both mildly dynamic websites done with Javascript.

When software engineers take it upon themselves to reduce the complexity of the world, then they must be able to understand which complexity is essential to the functioning of society.

That means that in addition to programming they must have the skills of social scientists, political scientists, physical engineers, and many more, depending on the kind of system they work with.

You cannot safely reduce complexity of an existing system without first understanding it deeply. Otherwise the side-effects you did not expect can literally kill people.

Because most of that complexity actually has a reason to exist. That’s the principle of “Don’t Destroy What You Don’t Understand”:

Chesterton’s Fence is a simple rule of thumb that suggests you should never destroy a fence, change a rule, or alter a tradition if you do not understand why it was created in the first place. China’s Four Pests Campaign during the Great Leap Forward shows the tragic consequences of meddling with things we do not fully understand.

The approach of just turning something off that’s described in the article can work with software that’s not mission critical, but when actual lifes (or livelyhoods) are on the line, it should never be tried.

Maybe we need something like the Hippocratic Oath for programmers:

First do no harm
primum non nocere
Practice two things in your dealings …
   either help or do not harm

Der Sovereign Tech Fund hat 2022 816.000 Euro für die Modernisierung von Fortran zur Verfügung gestellt. Damit viele Fortran-Programme nicht länger Legacy sind. Bis hin zu Fortran in wasm.

Das ist eigentlich der richtige Weg: wenn ganz viel Software von dieser alten Infrastruktur abhängt, ist es sinnvoll, die Infrastruktur zu aktualisieren.

Wobei COBOL und Fortran noch die einfachen Fälle sind. Die heftigsten Legacy Zombies sind Excel-Sheets.

My personal experience is that the wrong structures can destroy morality/ethics but even the best structures cannot protect it when the wrong people are in the wrong positions.

Experience 1: I did part of my civil service in the parent-led kindergarden I was in when I as a child myself, but the word-leader there just wanted cheap supervision for kids, so she schemed to turn me into pure cleaner (which I am not even permitted to be, because it replaced a regular job) instead of supporting the nursery school teachers.

Experience 2: every centralized social media platform.

Experience 3: My current instance which takes a stance against hate, because our admins are in a position where they can take a stance against hate, and they do.

Takeaways:

• Experience 1: good structures can be corrupted by people with inconsistent intentions.
• Experience 2: good people can be corrupted by bad structures.
• Experience 3: good people at the right places in good structures can bring good outcomes.

Bad structures corrupt good people, having the wrong people corrupts good structures.

So the Fediverse can be better than corporate controlled social media, but that’s not guaranteed. We still need to take care that the right people are in the right positions.

As an aside: science shows that good people can protect their integrity for a long time even when they work in problematic structures with perverse incentives.
